1- Year PROGRAM Description

Contemporary Psychoanalytic Concepts in Everyday Life One-Year Program

We believe that the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapies (psychotherapies of depth, insight and relationship) provides the greatest potential for healing and growth for the people we treat. Clinicians often realize, intuitively and experientially, that a deepened understanding of the complexities of the human experience can translate to an improved ability to help those we treat. Historically, however, accessing clinically-relevant educational experiences in psychoanalytically based, depth psychotherapy has been challenging for a number of reasons including the degrees of abstraction that often accompany theoretical concepts that are foundational in psychoanalytic models. This abstraction makes it difficult to situate these concepts in clinically relevant contexts for clinicians new to learning psychoanalytic ideas. Clinicians have often been left questioning the relevance of these topics and struggling to learn what can seem like a foreign language of ideas and theories.

Our Contemporary Psychoanalytic Concepts in Everyday Life One-Year Program aims to introduce clinicians to psychoanalytic ideas in a clinically-relevant manner by teaching these concepts through socially-relevant mediums including film, literature, and art. Through these mediums, important psychoanalytic concepts come to life and help us deepen our understanding of the complexities of the human experience. The program will meet monthly to discuss essential psychoanalytic ideas that will feel relevant to the everyday work life of practicing psychotherapists and students of psychotherapy.

This program is geared towards clinicians eager to learn more about the educational experiences at Western Pennsylvania Community for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies and who want an introduction to important psychoanalytic concepts. We are particularly interested in applicants who are considering enrolling in our Two-Year Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies in Practice Training Program which is offered alternating academic years.

Classes will be held in-person.  CDC guidelines for group gatherings will be followed.
